1. Introduction
Welcome to unclutr files! Your privacy is important to us. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, share, and protect your data when you use the unclutr files app on macOS.
By using unclutr files, you consent to the practices described in this policy.
2. Data We Collect
When you use unclutr files, we may collect or access the following types of data:
2.1 File Access
- Access to files only in folders you explicitly choose via the macOS file picker
- No automatic or broad disk access; the app uses the Mac App Store sandbox
- Selected locations are stored as security-scoped bookmarks on your device so you don't have to re-select them each time
- We process your files only on your Mac. No file content is uploaded to our servers.
2.2 Non-Personal Data
- Device information (macOS version, Mac model)
- App diagnostics (e.g., crashes and basic usage to improve stability)
2.3 Data from Third-Party Services
For paid features, platform services (e.g., Apple) and our subscription infrastructure provider RevenueCat may process limited purchase and entitlement data (such as product identifiers, transaction status, and anonymous app user identifiers) so purchases can be validated and restored.
3. On‑Device Processing
- Duplicate detection (hashing, comparison) runs entirely on your Mac.
- No file content is transmitted off your device. Only metadata (paths, sizes, hashes) is used locally for duplicate detection.
- Activity logs (e.g., scan sources, coverage, what was scanned or skipped) are stored locally on your device.
4. How We Use Your Data
We use your information for the following purposes:
- To provide and improve the unclutr files experience
- To provide customer support
- To comply with legal obligations
5. Third‑Party Services
We may use third‑party services to enhance performance and stability of the app:
- Analytics/Diagnostics: Apple Analytics or similar privacy‑respecting services
- Crash Reporting: Used solely to diagnose and fix issues
- Subscriptions: RevenueCat for purchase verification, entitlement management, and restore-purchase flows
We do not sell personal data. We do not include third‑party advertising SDKs. We only share the minimum purchase metadata required to operate paid features.
Each third‑party service has its own privacy policy, and we encourage users to review them.
6. File Access & Sandbox
- App Sandbox: unclutr files runs in the Mac App Store sandbox. It cannot access your files without your explicit permission.
- User-Selected Access: You choose which folders or volumes to scan via the standard macOS file picker. The app only accesses what you approve.
- Security-Scoped Bookmarks: To avoid re-selecting folders each time, the app stores bookmarks (references) to your chosen locations. These are stored locally and never leave your device.
7. Data Retention & Deletion
- We retain your personal data only as long as necessary for the purposes outlined above.
- You can request data removal by contacting us via the contact form below. Uninstalling the app removes local data (bookmarks, logs) from your Mac.
8. Your Rights (GDPR & CCPA)
If you are in the European Economic Area (EEA) or California, you have rights over your personal data, including:
- ✅ Access – Request a copy of your data
- ✅ Correction – Update inaccurate information
- ✅ Deletion – Request deletion of your data
- ✅ Opt-out – Disable personalized advertising (CCPA)
To exercise these rights, contact us via the contact form.
9. Children's Privacy
unclutr files is not intended for children under 13 (or the age of consent in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided personal data, please contact us to have it removed.
10. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy periodically. If changes are significant, we will notify users via in-app notifications or email (if applicable).
